A monolithic kernel is responsible for managing the CPU, memory, inter-process communication, device drivers, file system, and system server calls. On the other hand, Linux is newer, written from scratch, and is used on many more devices.

The Gnu kernel is called the Hurd. The Hurd is also based on the Mach micro kernel from Carnigi Melon university, but has a completely new user space designed to exploit multiple core and distributed CPU hardware. That was a loss for the entire industry, mostly unreported and lost in the arcane backup of history. Truly left me with a basic understanding of these differences. Very impressive.
